Black wire connects to ground on the outboard; emergency kill switch with lanyard for all outboard motors. Many older outboard motors lack protection that cuts or stops engine ignition if the operator falls overboard. This essential safety device includes a lanyard that attaches to your wrist or clothing and stops the engine in the event of an accident on the water. The switch is normally open circuit and closes when activated by pulling the lanyard; activation can also be done by pressing the red button. If there is no spark to your outboard's ignition system, the existing kill switch may be faulty or stuck in the off position and require replacement.
