For blind holes, the second tap allows for threading closer to the bottom of the hole. The first tap is used for initial cutting, while the second completes the process. Workpiece Setup: Securely clamp the workpiece with the tapping surface positioned horizontally or vertically to maintain proper tap alignment. Begin tapping by carefully aligning the tap, applying light axial pressure while gently rotating the tap wrench. After 12 turns, check that the tap remains perpendicular to the workpiece surface from multiple angles. Use a square if necessary for alignment correction. Proper alignment is typically established after 34 turns. If misalignment occurs, remove the tap and correct using both taps in sequence. Once the cutting portion of the tap is fully engaged, avoid applying additional axial pressure; the tap should advance naturally through the threaded engagement. Tapping Technique: Limit each forward rotation to 1/2 to 1 full turn. For taps smaller than M5, do not exceed 1/2 turn per pass. Reduce feed rate when tapping fine threads or when high accuracy is required. Tapping speed can be slightly faster in cast iron compared to steel. After each forward stroke, rotate the tap backward approximately 1/2 turn to break chips and aid in chip removal. For deeper holes, perform multiple in-and-out cycles to prevent chip buildup, maintain cutting efficiency, and allow cutting fluid to reach the cutting zone for cooling and lubrication. Maintain even hand pressure when using the tap wrench. Avoid excessive force or lateral movement to prevent thread damage, hole enlargement, or tapering.
