AD8318 1M-8GHz 70dB Logarithmic Detector Dynamic ALC Control AGCOscripts:The AD8318 is a demodulating logarithmic amplifier, capable of accurately converting the RF input signal to the appropriate decibel-scaled output voltage. It uses a progressive compression technique over a cascaded amplifier chain, each stage of which is equipped with a detector cell. The device is used in measurement or controller mode. The AD8318 maintains accurate log compliance for signals from 1 MHz to 6 GHz and provides usable operation up to 8 GHz. Input range is typically 60 dB (d: 50 Omega;) with an error of less than ± 1 dB. The AD8318 has a response time of 10 ns, which enables detection of RF bursts up to over 45 MHz. Additional system monitoring is also provided by a 2 mV/° c inclination temperature sensor output. A single 5 V power supply is required, and the current consumption is usually 68 mA. Power consumption is reduced to lt; 1.5 mW when the device is turned off. The AD8318 can be configured to provide a VGA control voltage, such as a power amplifier or measurement output, with a PIN VOUT. Since the output can be used for controller applications, wideband noise is minimal. In this mode, the setpoint control voltage is applied to the VSET. The feedback loop through the RF wave amplifier is via VOUT, whose output regulates the output of the amplifier to a quantity corresponding to the VSET. The AD8318 provides 0V to 4.9V output power at the VOUT pin, suitable for controller applications. As a measuring device, the VOUT pin is externally connected to the VSET to produce an output voltage, VOUT, which is a decreasing function of the linear in dB amplitude of the RF input signal. The logarithmic slope is nominally -25 mV/dB, but can be adjusted by scaling the feedback voltage from VOUT to the VSET interface. It is 20 dBm (d: 50 Omega;, CW input) using the INHI input. These parameters are very stable in relation to supply and temperature changes. The AD8318 is manufactured on SiGe bipolar disorder IC process and is available in 4mm x 4mm, 16-realize LFCSP for an operating temperature range of -40°C - 85°C.
